Yay for low carbs!

In the first week of eating low carbs I lost 6 lbs.–that’s twice as much as I was able to lose on the “portion control” diet we’ve been on since Feb. 2 in only a week! I feel better, too. And I’ve quickly become super sensitive to high carb foods. I had a Clif bar last night (with 44g of energy carbs) and felt sick from the sugar high. No more Clif bars for me. I’m amazed at how much less tired I am as well–I don’t need that afternoon nap anymore. I guess there really is something to this whole insulin/sugar thing! ;)

My condolences…

…to my Pastor and his family. His mother went home to heaven as a result of congestive heart failure this past week.

A Hopeful Outlook

This past week I was finally diagnosed with PCOS. I have gone to 4 doctors over the past 6 years and the fifth one finally put all the pieces together and explained to me what was going on. I won’t go into great detail–you can read more about it here–but it offers hope that I might be able to get pregnant after all. I was put on a glucose-regulating medicine and told to eat very low-carb. It must work because after almost 3 months of hardly losing any weight at all I lost 2 lbs. in 4 days of eating low-carb! The dr. told us it could take 4 months for the medicine to do its thing and get my ovaries to work right, but if all works as it should I will be able to get pregnant. How long that will take is unknown, but at least we have a direction now. Thank you for your continued prayers. We have no idea how many people are praying for us and our desire to be parents (my 3-year-old nephew is among them, my brother informed us), but we know God will hear them all and we appreciate them.

The Weirdness Report

Ever have a series of events that are so surreal you’re not quite sure what to make of them? That has been my life lately. I’m not sure where to start, so I’ll start at the present. I talked to an old high school friend today–probably my best high school friend as far as that goes. The most down to earth and supportive anyway, and the only one who is actually still attending church regularly and still Lutheran! Apparently she had been searching for me for years after I dropped off the face of the earth (in reality moved to Alaska) and had mentioned it to a fellow classmate who got my number from our 10 year class reunion booklet from 4 years ago. Anyway, she called when I was visiting the Montanans and my husband wrote down her number which was lost until I cleaned behind the end tables in the living room yesterday. So I called her back today and we talked for almost 2 hours. At first it was awkward, but then I found myself remembering events and people that I’d somehow blocked out of my mind for years. I could remember names and faces without cracking a year book. It was awesome. Had it not been for a student arriving I’m sure we would have talked longer. I don’t remember how we lost touch in the first place–somehow I think it was probably around 1995 when I transferred from BLC to WLC–but I hope we can keep in contact now.

I’ll let you in on a private joke…

My Uncle and I have gone back and forth with frogs and flies. I can’t remember exactly when it started, but the original joke was:
Q: What did one frog say to the other frog?
A: Time’s fun when you’re having flies!

Variations on that have flown (pun intended) back and forth between us for years. In fact, I have a chocolate frog with a gummy fly inside upstairs in my kitchen that I’ve been meaning to send him for months. Anyway, in honor of that joke and hoping he reads my blog, this is for you, Uncle Mike.
