Take a look at this commentary from our local paper. I’ve heard quite a bit about it on the news the past couple days and I am so relieved that there are still politicians–even if it is “only” on the local level–who actually listen to their constituents before conforming to their peers.
I’m beginning to wonder. My two brothers and other relatives aside, I think the majority Wisconsinites are wacky. There have been crazy things coming out of Madison, but this article made me laugh in a cynical sort of way. If a great liberal leader had died, like Jesse Jackson for instance, these people wouldn’t bat an eye about the flag being flown at half mast for a week in the name of civil rights. But here we have a conservative (and may I add pro-life!) religious world leader, respected by Catholics and non-Catholics alike for his leadership and accomplisments, being recognized on a state and national level and the whiny liberals can’t handle it.
“We have to ask whether this would be done for other cleric – the Dalai Lama or Jewish or Muslim leaders.” –Tony Hileman, executive director, American Humanist Association in Washington, D.C.
Give me a break! They already have our public schools where Hanukkah, Kwaanza, and Ramadan are celebrated without contest but CHRISTmas cannot even be recognized. They already have our Judicial system which has shown its power to legally murder unborn babies and helpless adults. Lowering the flag isn’t directly influencing anybody, just showing respect for a man who made great strides socially as well as being a religious figure. It’s not like they’re handing out rosaries at the foot of each flagpole!
I need to quote Elle from one of her posts, because it is so appropriate to add here as well:
“I sometimes hope God will have mercy on us as a country, but hope for mercy is slowly turning into a desire to see us get what is rightfully ours. Is that sick of me? I don’t know. We have it coming, that’s for sure. I just don’t want to be around when it gets here.”
My sentiments exactly!
I was doing some research to find an inexpensive Christmas gift for my students with a Christian message and ran across this article. What a great witness!!! But what a messed up political world we live in!
It might be well spent on this little treasure listed on ebay. Oh, don’t forget the article that goes with it!
Check out this site! Glenn Beck has done it again! How hilarious!
Usually when I am asked where I moved from or where I went to college, I’ll say “Milwaukee” without hesitation. Now I can’t believe I moved here from the City Of Whining Aldermen. With only one opposing vote, the Common Council of the city of Milwaukee voted to bill both the Bush and Kerry campaigns for expenses totalling over $200,000 incurred by the police department. Good grief! I agree with the lone Alderman that the city and state should be grateful for the attention received by the campaigns. To quote Alderman Witkowski in the article: “It was wrong, he argued, to “retroactively say, ‘We’re sorry we had the spotlight; we have a bill for you.’” I agree. If you don’t want an influx of people traveling from all over the state to your city, eating at your city’s restaurants, staying in your city’s hotels, buying stuff from your city’s merchants, just refuse to host the candidates. Do they not see the revenue generated by these candidates, only the expenditures? They want the city sales tax on all that revenue AND an additional $200,000. Again, good grief!!!
